Baby Clothes Size Chart India: Newborn to 24 Months by Age, Weight & Height
Arun Kumar
Quick answer: To choose a baby-clothing size in India, check the selected productβs size chart first, then compare your babyβs current length or height and weight. Treat the age label as a starting pointβnot a promise of fit. For rompers and bodysuits, also check torso length, chest room and space for the diaper.
A six-month-old may fit 3β6M in one brand, 6β9M in another and 9β12M in a third because brands use different body ranges, garment cuts and amounts of ease. At KayoBaby, we created this guide to explain the common newborn-to-24-month labels, how to measure accurately and what to do when age, weight and height suggest different sizes.
Β
Baby Clothes Size Chart by Age, Weight & Height (CM and KG)
The table below is a general shopping reference, not an official or universal Indian sizing standard. We compared published Indian-market charts from Carterβs India andΒ BumbleBee India, and checked the height-led buying guidance from H&M India. The displayed ranges use rounded lower and upper boundaries seen across the cited charts; they are not one brandβs specifications.

Β
The overlaps are intentional. Carterβs India currently ends 18β24M at 86 cm, while BumbleBee reaches 90 cm. A β24 monthsβ label can therefore represent a noticeably different garment from one brand to another.
This table is also not a baby growth chart. TheΒ Indian Academy of Pediatrics recommends WHO standards for growth assessment below five years, and the WHO Child Growth Standards provide separate charts for girls and boys, including length/height-for-age and weight-for-age. These tools help health professionals assess growth over time. A clothing label only helps you shop for a garment; it cannot tell you whether a baby is growing normally.
The Best Order for Choosing a Baby-Clothing Size
When several numbers are available, use them in this order:
- The exact productβs chart and live size selector. A general blog chart cannot override the measurements of the garment you are buying.
- The measurement that controls that garmentβs fit. Torso length matters greatly for a romper; chest matters for a top; waist, seat and inside leg matter for bottoms.
- Your babyβs current length or height and weight. Use both rather than selecting from one number in isolation.
- Age. Use the month label to narrow the options, not to make the final decision.
This measurement-first approach is also consistent with IS 14455:1997, Indiaβs standard for size designation of infantsβ garments. Its system uses the intended wearerβs body height as the control dimension and separates body size from finished-garment measurements; it does not make every brandβs cut identical.
What NB, 3M, 6M, 12M and 24M Usually Mean
The letter M means months, but a single-number label often describes the upper end of a band. On Carterβs Indiaβs current chart, 3M maps to 0β3 months, 6M to 3β6 months, 9M to 6β9 months, 12M to 9β12 months, 18M to 12β18 months and 24M to 18β24 months. NB is usually smaller than 0β3M, while 2T is a toddler cut and is not automatically identical to 24M.
The published brand charts compared above use familiar age bands but assign different height and weight ranges to the same labels. Always decode a label using that brandβs chart rather than converting β6Mβ into one fixed measurement.
Month-by-Month Baby Clothing Size Guide
|
Size stage |
Main fit concern |
Compare the next size when⦠|
|
Newborn |
Actual length and weight; gentle neck and limb openings |
The baby is already near the NB limit or the garment feels short through the body |
|
0β3M |
Shoulder-to-crotch length, chest and diaper room |
Bottom snaps pull, the neckline is difficult or kicking feels restricted |
|
3β6M |
Torso, armholes and room for a filled diaper |
Either length or weight reaches the current chartβs maximum |
|
6β9M |
Shoulders, hips and movement for sitting or crawling |
Fabric pulls during movement, not simply because the calendar reaches six months |
|
9β12M |
Romper torso; top chest and length; bottom waist, seat and inside leg |
Standing or crawling reveals short length, tight openings or compressed diaper room |
|
12β18M |
Baby-cut versus toddler-cut proportions |
A one-piece becomes short in the rise even though a separate top still fits |
|
18β24M |
Brand-specific height range and diaper allowance |
The child exceeds a critical measurement; do not switch from 24M to 2T by name alone |
Β
Many full-term babies wear 0β3M from birth, while others need NB first. For a premature or low-birth-weight baby, use current body measurements and a genuine preemie product chart. TheΒ American Academy of Pediatrics uses corrected age for interpreting development, but clothing must still fit the babyβs body today.
At 18β24 months, compare each brand carefully. The official charts reviewed for this guide differ by several centimetres. A 24M garment also often retains baby proportions and diaper room, while 2T may be longer or slimmer. That is a common pattern, not a universal rule.
How to Measure a Baby for Clothes at Home
Use a soft tape, record centimetres and measure while the baby is calm. A second adult can help keep the process quick and safe.
1. Body length or height
For children under two, health professionals use recumbent length - length while lying down. Place the baby on their back on a firm, flat surface, remove shoes and thick socks, keep the head neutral and gently measure from head to heel without forcing the knees. At home, this is a shopping comparison, not a replacement for clinical measurement.
2. Weight
Use a reliable baby scale with minimal clothing and a clean, dry diaper. Use clinical recordsβnot a shopping measurementβfor health decisions.
3. Chest, waist and seat
Pass the tape around the fullest part of the chest, just below the armpits, without compressing the skin. For bottoms, measure the natural waist and fullest part of the seat with the usual diaper on. Measure inside leg only when the chart requests it.
4. A well-fitting garment
If the brand publishes finished-garment measurements, lay a similar well-fitting piece flat without stretching it and copy the chartβs measurement points exactly.
Body Measurements and Garment Measurements Are Not the Same
This distinction prevents one of the most common online-sizing errors:
- Body chest circumference: The measurement all the way around the babyβs chest.
- Flat garment chest: The width across a garment laid flat. When a brand intends this as half-chest, doubling it gives the garment circumferenceβbut only do this if the chart confirms the method.
- Garment length: The finished itemβs length between stated points, such as shoulder to hem.
- Romper height or torso length: Often measured from the shoulder or neckline to the crotch; this is not the babyβs head-to-heel height.
- Ease: The difference between the body measurement and garment measurement that allows movement, a diaper or layering.
Our current KayoBaby baby-romper size guide shows laid-flat chest width and garment height for 0β3, 3β6, 6β9 and 9β12 months. In the illustration, chest runs straight across the garment and height runs from the top-centre neckline area to the bottom of the crotch. Compare these values with a similar, well-fitting romper laid flat at the same points; do not compare the 23 cm chest width directly with your babyβs full chest circumference.

These are current garment-chart values, not a medical growth reference. Available sizes also vary by product: many of our standard baby rompers offer those four bands, while selected newborn products may offer only 0β3 months. We do not currently present 12β18M or 18β24M as collection-wide KayoBaby romper sizes.
What If Age, Weight and Height Suggest Different Sizes?
First identify the garmentβs critical measurement, then check whether either body measurement exceeds the smaller sizeβs limit.
|
Situation |
Practical decision |
|
Baby is tall and lean |
For rompers, bodysuits and sleepsuits, size for length or torso first; then confirm the chest and openings will not be excessively loose. Separates may fit in different sizes. |
|
Baby is shorter with a broader chest or fuller thighs |
Prioritise chest, waist, seat and leg openings. Move up if the relevant maximum is crossed, even when age suggests the smaller size. |
|
Baby is exactly between two sizes |
For ordinary daywear, the larger size may provide useful room if the neckline, sleeves and legs still sit safely. Check the actual garment measurements. |
|
A filled diaper makes snaps pull |
Check torso/rise length and diaper allowance. Do not force the snaps or assume chest width is the problem. |
|
Buying sleepwear or a wearable blanket |
Follow the manufacturerβs stated intended fit and size limits. βAlways size upβ is not a safe universal rule for sleep products. |
Β
Consider a five-month-old who is 68 cm long and weighs 7.8 kg. Age suggests 3β6M, but the measurements reach the upper edge of several charts. A 6β9M one-piece may fit better if its chest and openings remain secure. A separate top and bottom do not have to use the same label.
How to Check the Fit After Delivery
Check the garment before washing it or removing tags if you may need an exchange.
|
The clothing may be too small when⦠|
The clothing may be too large when⦠|
|
The neck is difficult; openings leave pressure marks; shoulders pull; romper snaps strain; the diaper is compressed; or movement is restricted |
The neck gapes; sleeves cover the hands; fabric bunches near the face or body; the crotch hangs very low; trouser legs fall under the feet; or excess fabric affects movement |
Openings should sit comfortably without gripping the skin or gaping, and the baby should move naturally in their usual daytime positions.
Fabric, Washing, Diapers and Indian Weather
Cotton knit, woven cotton, muslin and blends stretch and recover differently. Cotton may shrink according to its construction, finish and care; there is no honest universal percentage. Check the fit before washing, follow the care label and do not buy several sizes larger merely to anticipate shrinkage.
For hot or humid weather, daywear should allow airflow and movement without excessive loose fabric. For cooler conditions, confirm that layers do not compress the chest, shoulders or diaper. Follow product-specific sizing for sleepwear rather than automatically sizing up.
A 60-Second Checklist Before Ordering Baby Clothes Online
Before you add a baby outfit to the cart, confirm:
- The live size exists on that exact product
- The chart shows body measurements or garment measurements
- Your babyβs current length/height and weight
- The critical measurement for that garment type
- Enough room for the diaper without pulling
- The intended season, layers and fabric behaviour
- The care instructions
- The current return or exchange conditions
If you are choosing a KayoBaby romper, use our baby romper size chart, compare it with a similar garment and review the live selector. You can also read our guide on how to use a newborn baby romper. When a productβs measurement method is unclear, contact our support team before ordering rather than guessing.
The Simple Rule to Remember
The right size is the one whose verified measurements fit the babyβs body, diaper, movement and garment type today. Check the exact product chart, measure carefully and use age only as a guide.
